Information

This rare pair of candlesticks, designed by Gunnar Ander and produced by Ystad Metall in Sweden during the 1950s, is a sophisticated example of Scandinavian mid-century decorative arts. The design masterfully combines geometric structure with organic materiality, reflecting Ander’s signature blend of formal elegance and playful material contrasts.

Each candlestick features a tripod base in bent brass, with three slender legs that curve outward before tapering back inward to meet the central support. This open framework creates a light, airy silhouette while ensuring stability. Rising from the center of the base is a vertical brass shaft partially wrapped in natural cane. The cane introduces a tactile and visual counterpoint to the polished metal, softening the form and adding a handcrafted dimension to the otherwise precise construction.

At the top, the shaft supports a conical brass candleholder, perforated with a subtle pattern of circular openings. These perforations are both decorative and functional, allowing heat to dissipate and referencing motifs common in Scandinavian lighting design. Resting within a circular brass collar above the candleholder is a green conical glass shade. The glass is thick and well-finished, with a deep, saturated hue that diffuses candlelight to produce a soft, ambient glow. This use of colored glass as an integral element of the design elevates the candlesticks from purely functional objects to expressive, sculptural forms.

Gunnar Ander (1908–1976) was a Swedish architect and designer who worked across architecture, interior design, and decorative objects. His collaboration with Ystad Metall resulted in a wide range of candleholders and lighting designs that remain highly regarded for their refined line work and inventive use of materials. His designs often play on the interaction between light, transparency, and line—an ethos evident in these candlesticks.

Ystad Metall, active until 1969, was one of Sweden’s foremost producers of high-quality metalware. Their partnership with Ander during the postwar years contributed significantly to the popularization of modern Swedish design, offering mass-produced objects that retained a strong artisanal and sculptural character.

Each candlestick measures 12 cm in width, 12.5 cm in depth, and 24 cm in height (approximately 4.7 x 4.9 x 9.4 inches). The set is in very good vintage condition, with visible patina and age-appropriate wear on the brass, slight signs of handling on the cane, and clean, intact green glass shades.
