Information

This rare pair of Ari easy chairs was designed by Arne Norell and produced by Arne Norell AB in Aneby, Sweden, during the 1960s. The chairs are celebrated for their striking combination of modernist design and luxurious comfort, standing as one of Norell’s most iconic contributions to Scandinavian mid-century furniture. The construction consists of a chromed steel frame with a distinctive cantilevered form, supporting a suspended seat that gives the chairs their characteristic floating appearance.

The seat and backrest are upholstered in original cognac brown leather with a deep, soft patina developed over decades of use. The leather shows natural signs of aging, including creases and color variation, which add character and richness to the pieces. The cushions are channel-stitched and generously padded, providing exceptional comfort. The back features leather straps with visible stitching and adjustable buckles, a functional and decorative detail typical of Norell’s work.

Arne Norell (1917–1971) was a Swedish designer known for his inventive approach to seating design and his ability to combine traditional craftsmanship with modern materials. Many of his designs, including the Ari chair, were produced posthumously due to their enduring popularity. The Ari won the British Furniture Manufacturers’ “Showpiece of the Year” award in 1973 and has since remained a highly sought-after design classic.

The style is distinctly mid-century Scandinavian, characterized by clean lines, exposed structural elements, and a focus on comfort. These chairs exemplify Norell’s philosophy of creating furniture that is as beautiful from the back as from the front, making them suitable for open-plan interiors where they can be appreciated from all angles.

Dimensions are 65 cm wide, 95 cm deep, and 74 cm high, with a seat height of 33 cm. This corresponds to approximately 25.6 x 37.4 x 29.1 inches, with a seat height of about 13 inches.
