Hans Wegner dining chairs
This exceptionally rare set of ten dining chairs, model CH-31, was designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by Carl Hansen & Søn in Denmark. Originally introduced in the 1950s, the CH-31 is emblematic of Wegner’s commitment to merging functionality with sculptural elegance. This set is crafted from solid oak, a wood favored by Wegner for its strength, clarity of grain, and Scandinavian character.
The oak frames exhibit a warm, natural tone with consistent grain variation, contributing to the visual richness and tactile appeal of the chairs. The design is defined by its curved, organically shaped backrest, gently rounded edges, and thoughtful joinery. The backrest is subtly angled to enhance comfort while preserving the clarity of the form. The woven cane seats and back panels are executed with precision, tightly interlaced in a pattern that provides both support and ventilation. The natural cane presents a light golden color, creating an understated contrast with the oak frames and reinforcing the overall sense of balance and lightness.
Each chair measures 52 cm in width, 52 cm in depth, 81 cm in height (20.5 x 20.5 x 31.9 inches), with a seat height of 42 cm (16.5 inches). These dimensions reflect the careful ergonomic considerations typical of Wegner’s seating designs, aimed at comfort in daily use.
The condition of the set is excellent, with minimal wear to the oak surfaces and the cane components remaining taut, clean, and undamaged. The craftsmanship is evident throughout, from the subtle curvature of the legs to the seamless integration of seat and backrest materials.
Hans Wegner, a central figure in Danish modernism, was known for his extensive work with Carl Hansen & Søn, where he developed many of his most enduring designs. The CH-31 is notable for being one of his earlier chair models and reflects his evolving exploration of organic form, material integrity, and modernist clarity. Its relative rarity in sets of this size adds to its historical and design significance.
