Beck & Jung ashtray

This brass ashtray model Ultima 15 was designed by Holger Bäckström and Bo Ljungberg for Beck & Jung and produced in Denmark during the 1980s. It was distributed by Diverse Ting in Malmö, Sweden, as indicated by the original manufacturer’s label, reflecting the cross-Scandinavian circulation of design objects during this period.

The ashtray is executed entirely in solid brass with a square, box-like form. The upper surface is structured as a precise geometric grid, featuring a series of circular recesses arranged in rows and framed by raised square and rectangular relief elements. This relief pattern creates a strong architectural character, balancing repetition and depth. The interior functions as a removable insert resting within a deep rectangular base, allowing for both practical use and ease of cleaning. The brass surface shows a warm golden tone with areas of darker oxidation and natural patina, particularly within the recesses, enhancing the sculptural quality of the piece.

Holger Bäckström and Bo Ljungberg collaborated extensively on lighting and decorative objects characterized by technical clarity and industrial precision. Their work often combines strict geometric systems with tactile material presence. The Ultima series reflects this approach, translating modernist principles into small-scale functional objects with a distinctly sculptural identity. Beck & Jung was known for producing robust, well-crafted metal objects, often emphasizing material honesty and modular construction.

The ashtray is in excellent vintage condition, showing signs of use consistent with age. The brass exhibits surface wear, light scratches, and patination, particularly inside the cavities and along edges, while remaining structurally sound and visually cohesive. These marks are consistent with the intended use and material aging rather than damage.

The ashtray measures approximately 14.5 cm in width, 14.5 cm in depth, and 5 cm in height, corresponding to about 5.7 inches wide, 5.7 inches deep, and 2 inches high.
