Melchiorre Bega side tables
This rare pair of side tables was designed by Melchiorre Bega and produced by Klan in Italy during the 1950s. The design reflects the refined modernist aesthetic characteristic of Italian postwar design, combining functionality, architectural clarity, and a restrained use of decorative detail. Bega’s work during this period was notable for its elegant proportions and synthesis of fine materials with industrial elements.
Each table features a square top in teak with softly rounded edges and a raised border, lending a sense of precision and craftsmanship. The surfaces are warm-toned with a rich natural grain and subtle depth of color. A brass disc inlay accentuates one corner of each top, providing a refined visual counterpoint to the otherwise minimal form. The tables rest on slender cylindrical legs in blackened steel, finished with brass-capped feet, which introduce a subtle contrast of materials and textures.
The combination of teak, steel, and brass exemplifies the Italian approach to mid-century design, in which craftsmanship meets industrial modernity. The composition is at once simple and sophisticated, with clear geometric balance and a focus on material quality.
These tables are in excellent vintage condition with minor signs of age and a beautiful patina consistent with careful use. They have been well preserved, maintaining their original finish and structural integrity.
Melchiorre Bega (1898–1976) was one of the leading figures in Italian modernism, known for his refined architectural practice and furniture designs that merged rationalist principles with a sense of luxury and proportion. His furniture for Klan and other Italian manufacturers represents the elegant transition between Art Deco influences and the emerging modernist idiom of postwar Italy.
