Information

This large and sculptural room divider was designed in the 1960s by Perttu Mentula and produced by Varjosen Puunjalostus Oy in Finland. It is a striking example of Scandinavian mid-century functional art, combining modular practicality with architectural presence. The divider is constructed from Oregon pine slats connected by black-painted wooden elements and supported by brass fittings, creating a rhythmic and geometric structure that is at once light and monumental.

The Oregon pine provides warm golden-brown tones, with visible grain patterns that emphasize the natural qualities of the material. The slats are arranged horizontally and spaced evenly, giving the piece a sense of transparency and allowing light and air to pass through while still functioning as a partition. The black-painted connectors introduce a graphic contrast, and the brass details at the feet and joints add refinement and subtle decorative character.

The design reflects the Scandinavian modernist interest in modular and flexible solutions for living spaces. This room divider could be used to structure open-plan interiors, offering both privacy and openness, and is adaptable to different settings due to its scale and configuration. The craftsmanship is notable for its precision in the repeated forms, as well as its durable construction.

The divider remains in excellent vintage condition, showing minor signs of age and a beautiful patina that adds depth to the surface. Its size and sculptural quality make it a rare and significant piece, both functional and highly decorative.

Dimensions: 440 cm wide and 171.5 cm high (approximately 173.2 x 67.5 inches).
