Hans Wegner Valet chair
This iconic valet chair, model JH540 “Jakkens Hvile” was designed in 1953 by Danish architect and designer Hans J. Wegner and presented at the Copenhagen Cabinet-makers’ Guild Exhibition the same year. The chair was produced by master cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The structure is crafted from solid oak, exhibiting a warm, natural tone and subtle grain. The sculptural backrest, designed in the shape of a coat hanger, is crafted in solid teak, providing both visual contrast and practical function. The seat lifts to reveal a hidden compartment, edged with brass fittings, intended for storing small personal items. The hinged mechanism operates smoothly, and the brass components display a fine patina.
The design is both playful and highly functional, emblematic of Wegner’s ability to combine form with purpose. The overall silhouette is light and balanced, with the backrest and seat framed by gently tapered, rounded legs. The construction demonstrates exceptional craftsmanship, with finely detailed joinery throughout.
The condition is excellent, with minor signs of usage and an attractive patina to the wood and brass. The chair remains structurally solid, and the mechanical aspects of the seat function perfectly.
Dimensions are 49.5 cm wide, 49 cm deep, and 94.5 cm in height. Seat height is 44.5 cm (19.5 x 19.3 x 37.2 inches, seat height 17.5 inches).
