Information

This easy chair from the “Kontiki” series was designed by Arne Norell and produced by Arne Norell AB in Aneby, Sweden during the 1960s. The chair embodies Scandinavian modernist principles, blending artisanal craftsmanship with functional elegance. Its frame is constructed from solid stained beechwood, featuring rounded structural elements and visible pegged joinery that underscore its handcrafted nature.

The seating system consists of suspended cushions held in place by leather harnesses secured with brass buckles. Upholstered in thick cognac brown aniline leather, the cushions show natural aging, creasing, and patina consistent with careful use over time. The seat, backrest, and armrest cushions are generously padded and supported structurally by tensioned leather straps and solid brass buckles, which serve both functional and decorative purposes. These straps wrap around the sides and rear of the chair, reinforcing the suspension while contributing to the piece’s safari-inspired aesthetic.

Arne Norell was an influential figure in mid-20th-century Swedish furniture design, recognized for his innovative use of materials and modular seating concepts. The Kontiki model is among his best-known works, reflecting his interest in campaign and safari-style furniture and the broader Scandinavian exploration of international design influences while maintaining precision in joinery and material quality.

The chair’s style is firmly rooted in mid-century Scandinavian design, characterized by warm natural materials, exposed structural supports, and an emphasis on comfort and lounge functionality. The condition of this example is very good, exhibiting age-appropriate patina on the leather, minor wear on the wooden frame, and intact suspension and brass fittings.

The dimensions are 95 cm wide, 85 cm deep, and 74 cm high, with a seat height of 39 cm. In imperial units, this translates to approximately 37.4 inches wide, 33.5 inches deep, 29.1 inches high, and a seat height of 15.4 inches.
