Niels O. Møller dining chairs

This is a set of six dining chairs, model 77, designed by Niels Otto Møller and produced by J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1950s. The model exemplifies the elegance and craftsmanship of Danish mid-century design, characterized by finely sculpted lines, an emphasis on natural materials, and a high level of joinery detail. Each chair is constructed from solid rosewood, with the seats recently reupholstered in a neutral grey wool fabric that complements the warmth and figure of the timber.

The frame features a gently curved, narrow backrest with a tapered and slightly bowed profile, offering ergonomic lumbar support while maintaining visual lightness. The rear legs extend upward into the backrest in a fluid line, while the front legs are straight with a subtle taper toward the foot. The construction relies on mortise and tenon joints and traditional hand-finishing techniques, visible in the seamless transitions between frame elements.

Niels O. Møller (1920–1982) was a Danish furniture designer trained as a cabinetmaker, whose work is widely celebrated for its purity of line, organic influences, and consistently high production quality. His designs were produced exclusively by the family-owned J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik, established in 1944 in Aarhus, Denmark. Model 77, first introduced in the 1950s, remains one of Møller’s most admired dining chair forms for its balance between simplicity and sophistication.

The rosewood has developed a rich, deep reddish-brown tone, with pronounced grain movement that adds depth to the visual texture. The chairs are in good vintage condition with minor signs of use including light surface wear and small edge marks. The recent reupholstery is clean and professionally done, preserving the chair’s intended profile and seating comfort.

Dimensions are 49 cm in width, 47 cm in depth, and 77.5 cm in height, with a seat height of 44 cm. In imperial units, this corresponds to approximately 19.3 inches wide, 18.5 inches deep, 30.5 inches high, and 17.3 inches seat height.
