Niels O. Møller dining chairs

This rare set of six dining chairs, model 80, was designed by Niels Otto Møller and produced by J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik in Denmark in 1968. Møller was renowned for his commitment to craftsmanship and organic design, and this model is a prime example of his refined yet functional approach to Danish modernism.

Each chair features a sculptural frame constructed from solid rosewood, showcasing the natural grain patterns and deep, reddish-brown coloration characteristic of this luxurious hardwood. The frames are notable for their fluid joinery, with continuous curves and softly rounded edges that reflect Møller’s signature emphasis on seamless transitions and ergonomic comfort. The organic backrest merges visually and physically into the rear legs, offering both support and an aesthetic of sculptural unity.

The seats and backrests have been newly reupholstered in a richly textured wool fabric in a vivid ultramarine blue. This contemporary textile enhances the original form with bold contrast while remaining sympathetic to the mid-century character of the chairs. The upholstery is tightly executed, following the subtle contours of the seat and ensuring long-term comfort and durability.

Niels Otto Møller (1920–1982) was a key figure in the post-war Danish design movement. Trained as a cabinetmaker before founding his furniture company in 1944, he insisted on traditional joinery methods and hand-finishing throughout production. His designs, including model 80, are celebrated for their clarity, understated elegance, and uncompromising attention to material and proportion.

These chairs remain in good vintage condition with minor traces of wear on the wooden surfaces, consistent with age and light use. The newly upholstered seats are pristine, and the frames are structurally solid.
