Arne Vodder attrib. sideboard
This rare and expansive sideboard is attributed to Danish designer Arne Vodder and was produced by Sibast Møbler in Denmark during the 1950s. Crafted in richly figured rosewood, the piece exemplifies the elegance and material richness characteristic of Scandinavian modernism. The wood presents deep reddish-brown and chocolate tones with pronounced grain patterns that enhance the sculptural presence of the cabinet.
The structure is rectilinear with a long horizontal format, supported by a solid wood base with slightly tapered round legs that lend the piece a light yet grounded character. The façade features four sliding doors and a central bank of six drawers. The drawers are fronted with organically shaped, undulating handles carved directly into the wood, creating a wave-like visual rhythm. This detail is a hallmark of Vodder’s signature style, combining utility with sculptural form.
Internally, the sideboard offers highly functional storage, with adjustable shelves behind the sliding doors. The interior is finished in contrasting lighter tones, which is typical of the period and emphasizes accessibility and clarity of function. The piece has been fully restored and is in good vintage condition, with careful attention paid to preserving the original integrity of the wood and joinery while revitalizing the finish.
Arne Vodder (1926–2009) was a prominent figure in Danish modern design, often working in collaboration with major Danish furniture manufacturers such as Sibast and Fritz Hansen. His designs, notable for their subtle curves and fine detailing, were widely exported during the mid-century period and found favor among architects and designers for both private and corporate interiors. Sibast Møbler, established in the early 20th century, was among Denmark’s leading manufacturers during the golden age of Danish furniture, recognized for producing pieces to exceptionally high standards.
This sideboard exemplifies the interplay between architectural simplicity and organic detail that defines Vodder’s work and represents a distinguished example of Scandinavian craftsmanship from the mid-20th century.
