Hans Wegner lounge chair
This rare daybed model GE-1, designed in 1954 by Hans J. Wegner, was produced by Getama in Denmark during the 1950s. The frame is made from solid oak with a light natural finish that showcases the grain pattern and warmth of the wood. The adjustable backrest is supported by a black metal mechanism with a notched incline system, secured by brass fittings. The seat and back cushions are upholstered in a lightly textured grey-beige fabric, tufted to create a soft, structured surface, and are complemented by a matching stool featuring identical materials and detailing. The overall construction is defined by a combination of precision craftsmanship and organic materiality, characteristic of Wegner’s mid-century designs.
Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) was one of Denmark’s most influential furniture designers, often referred to as the “Master of the Chair” for his prolific work in seating furniture. Trained as a cabinetmaker, Wegner emphasized the natural beauty of wood and the importance of ergonomics in his designs. His work, rooted in Danish functionalism, gained international acclaim during the 1950s and 1960s and remains highly regarded for its craftsmanship, simplicity, and lasting appeal.
The producer Getama, based in Gedsted, Denmark, collaborated closely with Wegner starting in the early 1950s. Known for their expertise in working with solid wood and upholstery, Getama helped to bring many of Wegner’s designs to life, maintaining a standard of production that matched his vision for longevity and high quality.
The GE-1 daybed and stool belong firmly to the Scandinavian mid-century modern tradition, marked by minimalistic yet functional forms, exposed structural elements, and a tactile relationship between user and material. The adjustable backrest mechanism adds a practical dimension, allowing for various lounging positions.
