Flush mount
This flush mount ceiling lamp, produced in Sweden during the 1940s, is a characteristic example of Scandinavian functionalist lighting. It combines practicality, simplicity, and a restrained elegance, aligning with the core principles of functionalism that emerged in the interwar and early postwar period.
The lamp consists of a hemispherical glass diffuser mounted on a circular metal base. The glass is rendered in a smooth, glossy cream / peach tone, creating a soft and uniform surface that gently diffuses light. When illuminated, the glass emits a warm and even glow, offering effective ambient lighting without glare. The metal fixture, which is only partially visible when installed, serves a purely functional role in anchoring the shade securely to the ceiling. The lamp is fastened using three small metal clips that maintain the integrity of the circular profile.
The form is compact and geometric, measuring 17.5 cm in diameter and 9.5 cm in height, which corresponds to approximately 6.9 inches across and 3.7 inches high. The minimal projection from the ceiling makes it suitable for low or standard-height ceilings, where discrete yet effective lighting is needed.
This type of lighting was typical in Swedish residential and institutional interiors during the mid-20th century, reflecting a broader European movement toward clarity in design and the elimination of excess ornament. The preference for glass as a primary material also speaks to the hygienic and maintenance considerations valued in the period.
In terms of condition, the lamp is well preserved for its age, with minor wear to the metal fittings and natural signs of patina consistent with use. The glass shade is intact and retains its original glossy finish.
