Paavo Tynell ceiling lamps
This rare pair of ceiling lamps was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Idman in Finland during the 1950s. Tynell was one of the most influential figures in Finnish lighting design, known for combining refined material quality with a delicate sense of atmosphere and carefully controlled illumination. His work often balanced modernist simplicity with subtle decorative elements, resulting in lighting fixtures that are both technically thoughtful and visually elegant.
Each lamp is composed of a cylindrical shade in opaline glass paired with a finely engineered brass structure. The opaline glass has a softly diffused, milky-white appearance that provides an even and gentle distribution of light. Its smooth cylindrical form gives the lamp a calm architectural presence while allowing the light to radiate uniformly through the surface. The glass shade is proportioned with slightly rounded edges, emphasizing the soft and understated character typical of Tynell’s lighting designs.
The lower section of the fixture reveals a distinctive layered brass construction. Several concentric circular brass elements form a stepped reflector and diffuser system beneath the glass cylinder. These rings are suspended within a fine metal support structure and surround the central light source, creating a visually dynamic composition when viewed from below. The brass has developed a natural aged patina with subtle tonal variations and areas of greenish oxidation, enhancing the sculptural quality of the metal and reflecting the lamp’s authentic vintage character.
When illuminated, the lamps produce a warm, atmospheric glow that is characteristic of mid-century Scandinavian lighting. The opaline glass diffuses the light softly while the brass rings beneath create subtle shadows and depth within the fixture. This layered construction was typical of Tynell’s approach, where the technical function of directing and softening light was integrated with an elegant decorative composition.
Paavo Tynell played a central role in establishing Finland’s international reputation in lighting design during the mid-twentieth century. Through his collaboration with manufacturers such as Taito Oy and later Idman, he developed numerous lighting designs that combined craftsmanship, innovative construction, and refined materials. His work is widely regarded as among the most sophisticated examples of Scandinavian modern lighting.
Each lamp measures 25 cm in diameter and 28 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 9.8 inches in diameter and 11 inches in height. The pair remains in good vintage condition with small signs of age and use, including natural patina on the brass components that contribute to the character and authenticity of the pieces.
