Paavo Tynell ceiling lamp
This rare ceiling lamp, model 9030, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1940s. The lamp is an exceptional example of Finnish mid-century lighting, combining refined brass craftsmanship with decorative detailing and a carefully balanced architectural structure. With its five-arm construction and original shades, the lamp reflects Tynell’s distinctive ability to merge functional illumination with an elegant sculptural presence.
The frame is executed in brass with softly curved arms radiating outward from a central stem. Each arm supports a cylindrical shade in a warm beige-pink tone, finished with decorative stitched edging and fitted with white diffusers on the underside. The shades create a controlled downward light while simultaneously softening the overall glow, producing an even and atmospheric illumination. The brass surfaces have developed a rich patina, with tonal variation ranging from warm golden hues to darker aged areas, emphasizing the lamp’s authentic period character.
A distinctive feature of this model is the perforated brass floral element at the upper section of the stem. Formed as a stylized blossom with punched circular perforations and serrated edges, it functions as both a decorative signature and a subtle light filter. This type of organic brass ornamentation is strongly associated with Paavo Tynell’s work and is one of the elements that has made his designs internationally sought after. The lower part of the stem is finished with a ribbed cylindrical detail, adding a technical and mechanical contrast to the otherwise soft and botanical design language.
Paavo Tynell is regarded as one of the most important Nordic lighting designers of the 20th century and played a central role in establishing Finland’s reputation for high-quality lighting design. His lamps are characterized by a combination of delicate decorative motifs and precise metalworking, often using perforated brass, sculptural forms, and carefully engineered light diffusion. Taito Oy, where Tynell served as artistic director, was Finland’s leading lighting manufacturer during the period and produced many of the country’s most iconic modern lighting fixtures.
The lamp is in good vintage condition with minor signs of use consistent with age. The brass shows light surface wear and natural patina, while the original shades are well preserved with small signs of age, contributing to the lamp’s authenticity.
