Arne Norell sofa
This rare three-seat sofa, model Inca, was designed by Swedish designer Arne Norell and produced by Arne Norell AB in Aneby, Sweden. Created in the late 1960s, the Inca model exemplifies Norell’s distinctive approach to furniture design, combining comfort, craftsmanship, and a modern yet rustic aesthetic that reflects Scandinavian design ideals.
The sofa features a dark-stained beechwood frame constructed with round profiles and a visible joinery technique, imparting both a robust and handcrafted character. The frame supports a suspended seat structure composed of wide leather straps, secured with brass buckles, contributing to both the flexibility and distinctive appearance of the piece. This construction method not only enhances comfort but also allows the leather elements to adjust naturally to the body.
The cushions are upholstered in rich brown leather, which presents a warm, natural tone with an attractively aged patina. The leather is thick and textured, exhibiting gentle creases that highlight the material’s authenticity and use over time. The sofa is equipped with cylindrical headrest cushions, attached with leather straps and brass hardware, adding to the piece’s functional and visual refinement. The back view is equally well-resolved, revealing a sculptural leather and wood composition that makes this sofa suitable for placement in open spaces.
Arne Norell (1917–1971) was one of Sweden’s most innovative designers of the postwar period. He was known for his mastery of leather and wood combinations, as well as his interest in creating inviting, highly livable furniture. Norell founded his own workshop, Norell Möbel AB, in 1954, which produced many of his most iconic designs, including the Inca and Ari models. His works are celebrated for their balance of craftsmanship and modernity.
The sofa remains in excellent condition. The leather surfaces display a uniform patina with minor signs of age-related wear, consistent with careful use. The wooden frame is structurally sound with only minimal surface marks, maintaining a deep, even finish.
Dimensions: length 240 cm (94.5 inches), depth 90 cm (35.4 inches), height 90 cm (35.4 inches). The seat height is 39 cm (15.4 inches).
