Hans Bergström table lamp
This table lamp, model 711, presents a refined and rare example of Swedish mid-century lighting design. The lamp features a warm, patinated brass construction with a finely perforated shade. The gently tapering conical shade is pierced with a series of small holes, allowing points of light to filter through when illuminated, creating a subtle decorative effect. The slender, bent brass arm extends gracefully from the circular base, maintaining a harmonious balance between form and function. The base itself is wrapped in hand-stitched brown leather, forming a continuous circular loop that provides both stability and an elegant visual counterpoint to the brass elements.
The lamp remains in excellent condition, exhibiting a well-preserved patina consistent with its age from the 1940s. Minor surface marks and wear are present on the brass and leather, adding to the authentic vintage character of the piece. The original craftsmanship and materials have been carefully maintained, ensuring that the lamp remains fully functional and visually compelling.
This model was designed by Hans Bergström, a prominent figure in Swedish lighting design. Bergström co-founded Ateljé Lyktan in 1934, a company that became known for its innovative and handcrafted lighting fixtures. His designs often combined utilitarian functionality with a sculptural approach to form and material, reflecting the values of the Swedish Modern movement. Ateljé Lyktan, based in Åhus, Sweden, was a key contributor to the mid-century Scandinavian lighting industry, producing high-quality luminaires that emphasized craftsmanship and timeless aesthetics.
The style of this lamp is characteristic of 1940s Swedish Modern design, blending clean, modernist lines with subtle decorative detailing. The combination of brass and leather, along with the perforated light pattern, reflects Bergström’s skillful balance of industrial materials and artisanal craftsmanship. The lamp’s compact proportions make it suitable as a desk or bedside light, while its sculptural quality allows it to function as an accent piece within a variety of interior settings.
The dimensions of the lamp are approximately 13 cm in diameter at the base, 28.5 cm in depth, and 39 cm in height. This corresponds to approximately 5.1 inches in diameter, 11.2 inches in depth, and 15.4 inches in height.
