Asea ceiling lamp

Information

Ceiling lamp in brass and opaline glass produced by Asea, Sweden, in the 1950s. The fixture has a central brass stem with a shallow ceiling cup and five gently curved arms radiating from a compact central hub. Each arm terminates in a flared brass socket cup with a characteristic crown-like, serrated upper edge, holding a conical opaline glass shade. The shades are executed in white, semi-translucent glass that softens and diffuses the light, creating an even illumination both downward and outward.

The color palette is dominated by the warm golden tone of the brass contrasted with the matte white of the opaline glass. The metal surfaces show a natural, even patina with small marks and specks typical of age, while the glass shades appear clean with minor signs of wear. The overall geometry is symmetrical and radial when seen from below, with the five arms forming a star-like pattern around the centre. The combination of curved arms, crown-shaped holders and simple cone shades is characteristic of mid-century Scandinavian lighting, where floral references are abstracted into clear, functional forms.

Asea was one of Sweden’s most important lighting manufacturers during the mid-20th century, collaborating with many prominent designers and engineers. The company is known for precise metalwork, reliable electrical construction and a wide range of fixtures for domestic and public interiors. This lamp reflects Asea’s approach to Scandinavian modernism: restrained ornament, high material quality and a focus on comfortable, glare-free light.

The lamp is in good vintage condition with small signs of usage. The brass retains its original surface with light oxidation, small scratches and local wear consistent with normal use, while the glass shades show minor, superficial marks but no major defects. As with all vintage electrical pieces, the wiring and installation should be checked by a qualified electrician before use.

Dimensions are approximately 60 cm in diameter and 60 cm in height, corresponding to about 23.6 inches in diameter and 23.6 inches in height.
