Paavo Tynell table lamp
This table lamp, model 5066, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1950s. The lamp consists of a square perforated brass top plate, a woven rattan or reed shade, and a central column made of dark-stained beech. The perforated brass top has a rounded square shape with a dense pattern of small holes arranged in concentric spirals, creating a decorative lighting effect when the lamp is illuminated. The shade is constructed from vertically arranged reed elements bound horizontally in regular intervals, forming a tapered square shape with softened corners.
The column is made of solid dark-stained beech, presenting a warm brown tone with visible natural grain, and it is mounted on a circular brass base. The base incorporates the lamp’s switch, executed in brass with a small cylindrical control. The combination of brass and dark wood reflects Tynell’s characteristic material palette, in which refined metalwork and natural materials are combined to create a soft, atmospheric lighting effect. The underside of the base is stamped with the Taito Oy marking and the model number 5066.
Paavo Tynell is widely regarded as Finland’s most important lighting designer of the mid-twentieth century. His collaboration with Taito Oy produced many iconic models that integrated craftsmanship, decorative perforations, and elegant proportions. The use of woven shades and brass surfaces is typical of his work in the 1940s and 1950s, where he often explored the interplay between direct and filtered light. Model 5066 is a representative example of this approach, with the perforated top plate casting patterned reflections and the woven shade producing a warm, textured glow.
The lamp is in good vintage condition with signs of usage and patina throughout the brass surfaces and wooden elements, consistent with age and material.
