Knud Færch dining chairs

A rare set of twelve dining chairs, model SM 521, designed by Knud Færch and produced by Slagelse Møbelfabrik in Denmark, dating to 1969. The model reflects the refined Danish cabinetmaking tradition of the late 1960s, where sculptural form and precise joinery are combined into a highly resolved and balanced design.

Each chair is crafted with a solid oak frame, complemented by a sculpted backrest in teak, creating a subtle contrast in tone and grain. The backrest is distinctly shaped with an organic, wing-like profile, gently curved to support the back while maintaining a light and elegant appearance. The transition between the vertical supports and the backrest is executed with visible finger joints, emphasizing both craftsmanship and structural clarity.

The seat is newly upholstered in natural leather, smoothly stretched over a softly rounded seat frame. The light tone of the leather contrasts harmoniously with the warmer hues of the wood, and will develop a richer patina over time through use. The proportions are carefully considered, with slender, slightly tapered legs and a supportive underframe that ensures stability while preserving a visually open structure.

The design balances comfort and aesthetics, with the curved backrest and subtly shaped seat providing ergonomic support, while the overall silhouette remains refined and understated. The combination of oak and teak highlights the material sensitivity typical of Danish modern furniture, where different woods are used to articulate form and detail rather than decoration.

Each chair measures approximately 57 cm in width, 48 cm in depth, and 73 cm in height, with a seat height of 44 cm, corresponding to 22.4 x 18.9 x 28.7 inches and a seat height of 17.3 inches. The set remains in excellent condition with only minor signs of usage, consistent with age, and features recently reupholstered seats in natural leather.
