Patrick Nordström attrib. lidded urn
This rare lidded urn is attributed to Patrick Nordström and was produced by Royal Copenhagen in Denmark during the early twentieth century. Combining a restrained ceramic form with an elaborate bronze-mounted lid, the piece reflects the sophisticated collaboration between ceramic and metal arts that characterized some of the most ambitious Scandinavian decorative objects of the period. The bronze lid, created by the renowned silversmith and metal artist Georg Thylstrup and stamped “GT,” elevates the vessel beyond a functional container into a finely executed work of decorative art.
The urn is characterized by its harmonious baluster-shaped silhouette, resting on a subtly tapering foot and rising to a broad shoulder beneath a recessed neck. The stoneware body is finished in a richly nuanced glaze that transitions between warm ochre, tobacco brown, and smoky bronze tones. The surface displays the atmospheric, organically flowing effects that became a hallmark of Patrick Nordström’s ceramic practice, where variations in firing and glaze chemistry create landscapes of color and texture across the vessel. Delicate concentric turning rings around the shoulder add a subtle architectural quality while emphasizing the hand-crafted nature of the piece.
The bronze lid forms a striking contrast to the softness of the ceramic body. Cast and chased with exceptional precision, it features a sculptural finial surrounded by pierced and scrolling ornamentation inspired by Baroque and Rococo metalwork. The dark patinated bronze harmonizes beautifully with the earthy glaze while adding a level of refinement and complexity that reflects Georg Thylstrup’s mastery as one of Denmark’s foremost decorative metal artists. The collaboration between ceramic and bronze creates an object that bridges the Arts and Crafts movement and the emerging Scandinavian modern aesthetic.
Patrick Nordström (1870–1929) remains one of the most celebrated figures in Danish ceramics. After joining Royal Copenhagen, he revolutionized the company’s stoneware production through his innovative glazes and expressive forms inspired by both Asian ceramics and the Arts and Crafts tradition. His work helped establish Danish stoneware as an internationally recognized artistic medium, and his pieces remain highly sought after by collectors and museums alike. Works combining his ceramics with bronze mounts by distinguished metal artists are particularly rare and desirable.
The underside bears the Royal Copenhagen hallmark with the characteristic three-wave mark and original paper label, confirming its production by the celebrated Danish manufacturer. The urn remains in good vintage condition with minor signs of age and use consistent with careful preservation. The glaze retains its depth and richness, while the bronze lid displays an attractive, naturally developed patina.
