Easy chairs

This rare pair of Swedish Modern easy chairs was produced in Sweden during the 1940s. Generously proportioned and softly sculptural, the chairs reflect the period’s interest in comfort, craftsmanship, and rounded upholstered forms.

Each chair has a broad, enveloping profile, with the backrest flowing continuously into substantial curved armrests. The deeply button-tufted interior creates a distinctive, almost shell-like form, while vertical divisions across the upper back and arms emphasize the chairs’ generous volume. Subtle contrasting piping follows these divisions as well as the edges of the seat cushions, adding a refined decorative detail.

The chairs retain their original pale grey/blue fabric, giving them a particularly authentic period character. The upholstery has a softly textured appearance and is complemented by short, tapered birch legs in a warm honey tone. The restrained wooden base allows the upholstered body to remain visually dominant while lifting it slightly from the floor.

With their low seat height, deep proportions, and embracing backs, the chairs have the relaxed character associated with Scandinavian lounge furniture of the 1940s. Their substantial yet rounded silhouettes make them equally effective as a pair in a living room or as individual statement chairs.

Both chairs are preserved in good vintage condition with signs of use and patina consistent with their age. The original upholstery shows natural age-related wear, contributing to the character and authenticity of the pair.
