Mats Theselius easy chair
The chair is characterized by a rounded, barrel-shaped body formed from curved metal panels with alternating horizontal bands of etched surface decoration. Vertical metal straps, visible rivets and small connecting plates emphasize the structural construction and give the exterior an architectural, almost mechanical appearance. The continuous curved shell surrounds the sitter, forming the backrest and armrests within a compact, geometric silhouette. The chair rests on four short metal legs with circular feet, slightly elevating the cylindrical body above the floor.
The interior is upholstered in natural golden-tan moose-hide leather, covering the gently curved backrest, inner armrests and generously padded seat. The leather provides a warm and tactile contrast to the cool, industrial character of the metal exterior. The upper ends of the armrests are finished with smoothly shaped, dark red-stained beechwood details, adding a further contrast in material and color. The exposed metal framework and visible fastenings reinforce the chair’s deliberately constructed appearance, while the soft upholstery creates a comfortable and enclosed seating experience.
Mats Theselius (born 1956) is a Swedish furniture designer known for his distinctive approach to materials, craftsmanship and limited-edition furniture production. His work frequently explores the relationship between industrial manufacturing and traditional furniture-making techniques, often incorporating unconventional materials such as metal, leather and wood. Theselius’s designs occupy a position between functional furniture and sculptural objects, with a strong emphasis on material authenticity and expressive construction.
The Älgskinnsfåtöljen, introduced in 1991, is among Theselius’s most recognizable designs and exemplifies his interest in combining contrasting materials within a clearly defined geometric form. Produced by Swedish furniture manufacturer Källemo, the chair reflects the company’s longstanding commitment to experimental contemporary design and collaborations with individual designers. Its cylindrical structure, exposed metal fittings and natural leather upholstery create a distinctive interpretation of the traditional upholstered armchair.
This example retains its manufacturer’s marking, reading “ÄLGSKINNSFÅTÖLJ MATS THESELIUS 1991 237/360 KÄLLEMO SWEDEN” confirming the model, designer, year of design, edition number and manufacturer.
The chair is in good vintage condition, with visible signs of use and a well-developed patina consistent with its age. The metal exterior displays surface oxidation, scratches and tonal variations, while the moose-hide leather shows natural creasing, discoloration and areas of wear. The stained beechwood armrests retain their deep reddish finish with minor signs of use. These characteristics contribute to the chair’s distinctive material expression and aged appearance.
