Wall lamp
Rare Swedish Grace wall lamp with two integrated display shelves, produced in Sweden during the 1930s. The lamp combines illumination and display within a single architectural composition, with an elongated oval framework measuring 70 cm high, 42 cm wide and 21 cm deep (27.6 x 16.5 x 8.3 inches).
The structure is made from green-painted brass, now showing areas where the original dark green surface has worn to reveal warm brown and copper-toned metal beneath. Slender curved rods intersect across the frame in a repeated system of arches, creating a symmetrical geometric pattern. A large panel of frosted glass is held within the metal framework and functions as a diffuser for the light source positioned behind it. When illuminated, the glass produces a soft, warm field of light while the metal framework projects pronounced linear shadows onto the surrounding wall.
Two small projecting shelves are incorporated asymmetrically into the construction. Made from sheet metal, they have shallow, slightly upturned edges with a pressed or crimped decorative border. Their placement allows the lamp to function simultaneously as a wall light and a small display structure for lightweight decorative objects. The combination of curved metalwork, frosted glass and functional shelving gives the object an unusually sculptural and architectural character.
The lamp belongs to the Swedish Grace period, the Scandinavian interpretation of 1920s and early 1930s classicism that developed between Nordic Neoclassicism and the emergence of Swedish Functionalism. Swedish Grace design typically combined restrained classical principles with simplified geometry, refined proportions and carefully controlled ornament. In this lamp, those characteristics appear in the symmetrical outer frame and repeated arcs, while the intersecting curves introduce a more graphic quality associated with decorative metalwork of the interwar period.
The lamp is in good vintage condition with age-related wear consistent with its approximately ninety-year history. The painted brass surface displays rubbing, oxidation and areas of exposed metal, producing a varied dark green, brown and copper-colored patina. The two shelves show more pronounced oxidation and surface corrosion, particularly across their horizontal surfaces. The frosted glass are intact, with minor signs of age and use.
