Paavo Tynell wall lamp
A very rare and possibly unique wall lamp designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy, Finland, in 1946. The lamp originates from the celebrated Restaurant Wivex in Copenhagen’s Tivoli Gardens, a provenance that further enhances its historical significance and rarity. Executed entirely in brass, the design demonstrates Tynell’s exceptional ability to merge sculptural form with atmospheric light, creating an object that functions equally as a lighting fixture and a decorative work of art.
The lamp is distinguished by its elongated wall-mounted stem, formed with elegant organic curves and subtle decorative details reminiscent of bamboo nodes, a recurring motif in Tynell’s work. The sculptural shade features a softly flared silhouette with a pronounced neck and undulating rim, giving it the appearance of a handcrafted vessel. Its surface is richly decorated with numerous perforated and embossed elements that create a delicate constellation of light when illuminated, projecting decorative reflections onto the surrounding walls and contributing to the warm and intimate ambience for which Tynell’s lighting designs are renowned.
Produced during the immediate post-war period, this piece represents the highly creative years of Finnish modernism when Paavo Tynell was at the height of his influence. Lighting fixtures from prestigious public commissions and restaurant interiors are among the most sought-after works by the designer, and examples with documented provenance to Tivoli Gardens are exceptionally uncommon. The handcrafted nature of the construction, combined with the artistic treatment of the brass surfaces and perforations, suggests a special commission rather than a standard production model.
The brass has developed a rich patina over decades of use, highlighting the lamp’s age and authenticity. When lit, the perforations emit a gentle decorative glow, while the interior of the shade reflects a warm golden light that accentuates the material’s natural character and creates a highly atmospheric effect.
The lamp remains in good vintage condition with age-related wear and patina throughout. There are visible signs of earlier repairs to the stem and some dents to the shade, consistent with its age and history of use.
