Information
Very rare Model 29A sideboard designed by Arne Vodder in 1958 and produced by Sibast Møbelfabrik in Denmark. Constructed in rosewood with reversible sliding doors featuring white and yellow Formica surfaces, the sideboard represents an important example of Danish modern furniture design from the late 1950s. Its elongated rectangular cabinet, carefully proportioned compartments, and tapered wooden legs reflect the combination of functional construction, refined cabinetmaking, and geometric composition characteristic of Scandinavian modernism.

The cabinet is veneered in richly figured rosewood, displaying a warm reddish-brown coloration with darker, almost black grain patterns running across the top, sides, and front. The front is divided into several functional sections, including two sliding doors, a vertical bank of drawers, and a larger hinged compartment on the right. The reversible sliding doors allow the appearance of the sideboard to be changed between natural rosewood and contrasting yellow and white Formica surfaces. Small circular recessed handles provide a discreet means of operating the doors. The combination of natural wood and colored laminate introduces a distinctly modern element to the otherwise traditional cabinet construction.

The central drawer section is distinguished by sculpturally shaped fronts with elongated, recessed finger grips, creating a repeated horizontal pattern. These carefully formed details are characteristic of Arne Vodder’s approach to furniture design, in which functional elements are integrated into the overall architectural composition. The drawers feature light-colored wooden interiors, while the compartments behind the sliding doors contain adjustable storage shelves. The larger right-hand compartment is fitted with a hinged fall-front door and internal shelving. The cabinet rests on a separate wooden base with six slender, tapered legs connected by horizontal supports, giving the substantial rectangular body a visually lighter appearance.

Arne Vodder (1926–2009) was a Danish architect and furniture designer who became an important figure in the development of Danish modern design during the postwar period. He studied under Finn Juhl at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and established his own architectural practice in the early 1950s. His furniture designs are recognized for their carefully balanced proportions, sophisticated use of hardwoods, and integration of sculptural details into functional forms. During the 1950s and 1960s, Vodder developed numerous furniture collections for Danish manufacturers, particularly Sibast Møbelfabrik, with whom he maintained a significant professional collaboration.

Sibast Møbelfabrik was a Danish furniture manufacturer with origins dating to 1908. The company developed an international reputation during the mid-twentieth century through its production of modern furniture designed by Arne Vodder and other Danish designers. Its manufacturing combined traditional cabinetmaking expertise with increasingly modern production methods, emphasizing carefully selected materials, precise joinery, and high standards of finishing. The collaboration between Vodder and Sibast resulted in a range of sideboards, desks, cabinets, and seating furniture that became representative of Danish furniture production during the period.

The Model 29A belongs to the period when Danish furniture designers increasingly explored the relationship between natural materials, industrial surfaces, and adaptable domestic storage. The reversible doors are a particularly distinctive feature, allowing the composition to alternate between a uniform rosewood appearance and a more graphic arrangement of contrasting colors. This combination reflects the broader development of Scandinavian modernism during the late 1950s, when established cabinetmaking traditions were increasingly combined with new materials and more experimental approaches to furniture design.

The sideboard is in good vintage condition, with signs of age and use consistent with its production period. The rosewood surfaces retain their characteristic grain and warm coloration, with minor surface marks, light scratches, and natural variations in tone. The wooden edges, drawer fronts, and legs display gentle wear and an even patina developed over time. The colored Formica panels show a clean, uniform appearance, while the interior compartments and drawers remain well preserved. The overall construction and original design details are clearly maintained.
