Niels O. Møller dining chairs
This is a set of six dining chairs, model 78, designed by Niels O. Møller and produced by J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1960s. The chairs are constructed in rosewood, notable for its expressive, darkly figured grain, and are upholstered in smooth black leather.
The frame presents a sculptural form with soft curves and an organic silhouette, especially evident in the subtly tapering legs and gently arched backrest. The three horizontal back slats are integrated seamlessly into the uprights, creating a continuous flowing line that exemplifies Danish craftsmanship and Møller’s dedication to form and material. The joinery is clean and precise, emphasizing the chair’s light visual weight despite its sturdy build. The seats are slightly concave, providing ergonomic comfort while maintaining a minimal profile.
The chairs are in very good original condition with minor age-appropriate wear to the wood and leather, consistent with careful use. The rosewood has developed a rich patina, and the black leather shows minor surface marks but retains its suppleness and structure.
Niels O. Møller, active primarily in the mid-20th century, was known for his commitment to traditional cabinetmaking techniques combined with refined modern aesthetics. His designs were typically produced by J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik, a company founded by Møller in 1944 and known for maintaining high levels of craftsmanship. This model is a quintessential example of Scandinavian mid-century modern design, blending function with elegance in a restrained, organic idiom.
