Bodafors side table
This rare side table, produced by Bodafors in Sweden during the 1960s, features an exceptional intarsia top that demonstrates the highest level of Scandinavian craftsmanship and artistic woodworking of the period. The table’s organic triangular form reflects the influence of postwar modernism, with a focus on natural materials, balanced geometry, and subtle asymmetry.
The tabletop presents an intricate marquetry composition, inlaid with multiple species of wood including teak, walnut, birch, rosewood, and elm. The contrasting grains and tones are arranged in a fluid, abstract pattern of intersecting curves and geometric shapes, creating a strong visual rhythm. The composition recalls the biomorphic and graphic tendencies found in Scandinavian decorative arts of the mid-century era, emphasizing both craftsmanship and artistic expression.
The table rests on three tapering legs in black-lacquered wood, each accented with a brass sleeve at the top. This detail not only strengthens the structural connection but also introduces a refined metallic accent that harmonizes with the warm hues of the wood. The legs’ slender profile contributes to the table’s visual lightness while ensuring stability and proportion.
The table has been completely restored and is in good vintage condition with minor signs of age consistent with careful use. The surface retains a deep, lustrous finish that highlights the natural qualities of the various woods used in the inlay.
This piece exemplifies the Swedish mid-century approach to furniture as both functional and decorative art, where simplicity of form meets intricate craftsmanship.
