Hans Bergström table lamp
This rare table lamp was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by ASEA in Sweden during the 1950s. The lamp features a sculptural shade crafted from translucent white acrylic, shaped into an elongated conical form with overlapping curved sections. This design creates a dynamic interplay of light and shadow while diffusing illumination softly and evenly throughout a room.
Supporting the shade is a brass tripod base composed of three slender legs extending from the lower section of the shade. The brass has developed a warm patina typical of mid-century Scandinavian lighting, contributing to the lamp’s vintage character. The design reflects Bergström’s signature emphasis on organic shapes and innovative use of materials to blend function with visual appeal.
Hans Bergström (1910–1996) was a prominent Swedish lighting designer known for his work with ASEA, a leading Scandinavian lighting manufacturer. He was an early pioneer in the use of acrylic for lighting, combining modern materials with traditional craftsmanship to create elegant, lightweight designs. ASEA, established in the late 19th century, played a crucial role in defining mid-century Scandinavian lighting aesthetics with high-quality, innovative products.
This lamp exemplifies key elements of Scandinavian mid-century design, including minimalism, functionalism, and an emphasis on effective light diffusion. The layered and curved acrylic shade enhances both the lamp’s sculptural form and its illumination, making it a refined and practical lighting solution.
The lamp remains in good condition with minor signs of age-related wear. It measures 15.5 cm in diameter and 28.5 cm in height (6.1 x 11.2 inches).
