Arthur Andersson floor vase
This rare floor vase was designed by Arthur Andersson and produced by Wallåkra Stenkärlsfabrik in Sweden during the 1950s. Crafted in high-fired stoneware, the vase presents a tall, cylindrical silhouette tapering slightly toward its base, which rests on a small foot ring. Its deep, warm brown glaze is punctuated by a series of evenly spaced incised horizontal lines revealing the lighter clay beneath, creating a rhythmic, understated decorative effect typical of Scandinavian modernist ceramics.
The interior bears a natural yellowish-brown glaze, and the base is stamped with the “WALLÅKRA” mark, verifying its origin. The form combines functional simplicity with a clear sculptural presence, reflecting Wallåkra’s tradition of merging utilitarian stoneware with expressive artistry.
Arthur Andersson was a key figure in southern Sweden’s ceramic scene, known for his exploration of local materials and traditional firing methods at Wallåkra. The factory, with its long heritage of producing salt-glazed stoneware using regional clays and wood-fired kilns, is renowned for the tactile and material qualities of its ceramics.
The vase is in good vintage condition, showing some signs of use and a minor hairline crack near the rim, which does not affect the overall integrity. The glaze and incised decoration remain well preserved.
