Information

This rare pair of table lamps, model 700, was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden during the 1940s. Each lamp features a rounded, organic-shaped white opal glass shade with a soft matte finish. The glass is securely held by a brass mount, which extends into a distinctive protective wire frame, adding both functionality and elegance. The design is further enhanced by the stems, which are wrapped in tightly braided dark brown leather, offering a tactile contrast to the smooth surfaces of the brass and glass. The solid brass bases have developed a warm, aged patina, and they are marked with the Ateljé Lyktan Åhus manufacturer’s stamp and the model number 700 on the underside.

Hans Bergström, a prominent Swedish lighting designer and co-founder of Ateljé Lyktan, is known for his ability to combine traditional craftsmanship with a modern aesthetic. His work often incorporated natural materials, such as leather, wood, and hand-blown glass, with a functional yet refined design approach. Model 700 exemplifies Bergström’s postwar design philosophy, which sought to create lighting fixtures that were not only functional but also sculptural, contributing to the beauty and atmosphere of a space.

The style of these lamps is a prime example of mid-century Scandinavian modernism, characterized by clean lines, functional forms, and a thoughtful combination of materials. The lamps provide diffuse, ambient lighting when illuminated and remain visually striking as sculptural objects when not in use.

Each lamp measures 54 cm in height (21.3 inches) and 23 cm in diameter (9 inches). In terms of condition, the lamps are very well preserved, showing only light, age-appropriate wear on the brass surfaces and leather wrapping. The glass shades are intact, free from cracks or chips, and in excellent condition.
