Biography
Arne Hovmand-Olsen trained as a cabinetmaker in Denmark before establishing himself as a furniture designer in the years following the Second World War. His practical training in woodworking informed his approach to design, where structural clarity and material quality were central considerations. He became active during a period when Danish furniture gained widespread international recognition, particularly in export markets such as the United States and the United Kingdom.
Throughout his career, Hovmand-Olsen collaborated with several respected Danish manufacturers, including Mogens Kold Møbelfabrik and Jutex in Denmark. His designs frequently featured gently curved backrests, tapered legs, and carefully sculpted details that emphasized both comfort and visual lightness. Many of his chairs and tables were produced in teak and rosewood, materials that became closely associated with Danish modern furniture of the period.
Arne Hovmand-Olsen’s work represents a refined and production-oriented strand of Danish mid-century design. His furniture remains widely collected and is valued for its craftsmanship, balanced proportions, and its role in shaping the international reputation of Danish modern furniture.
