Helge Sibast (1908–1985) was a Danish furniture designer and cabinetmaker associated with the development of Danish modern furniture during the mid-20th century. He is best known for his sculptural wooden chairs, particularly the Sibast No. 7, No. 8, and No. 9, which combined refined craftsmanship, expressive form, and careful attention to comfort. His work reflects the Danish tradition of high-quality woodworking, while also showing a strong ability to develop furniture suited for both domestic interiors and the international export market.

Biography

Helge Sibast grew up in his father’s cabinetmaking workshop in Stenstrup on Funen, where Sibast Møbler had been founded in 1908 by P. Olsen Sibast. From an early age, he was surrounded by wood, tools, and furniture production, and he trained within the family workshop. This practical background gave him a deep understanding of material, construction, and craftsmanship.

After his father’s death in 1943, Helge Sibast took over the company together with his siblings, Ole Sibast and Emma Sibast Christensen. While his siblings managed sales and finance, Helge became responsible for design, product development, and production. Under his direction, Sibast Møbler developed into an internationally recognized furniture manufacturer, later known as Sibast Furniture.

Sibast’s own designs became especially successful on the Danish market. His furniture combined detailed craftsmanship with a forward-looking approach to production, allowing certain design elements to be repeated and adapted across different models without losing their quality or individuality. This balance between handcraft and controlled industrial production became central to the company’s success.

Among his most important designs are the Sibast No. 7, No. 8, and No. 9 dining chairs from 1953. These chairs are known for their distinctive sculptural qualities, carefully shaped wooden frames, floating seats, fine joinery, and complex construction. Their expressive yet functional form made them some of Sibast’s most recognizable works and helped establish his reputation as a significant figure in Danish furniture design.
