Børge Mogensen easy chairs
This rare set includes three easy chairs, two matching side tables, and one stool, all designed by Børge Mogensen and produced by Søborg Møbelfabrik in Denmark in 1968. Constructed from solid beech, the pieces feature a warm natural finish that emphasizes the clean, utilitarian lines characteristic of Mogensen’s design language. The chairs are built with a slatted wood construction, featuring sloped backs and integrated armrests engineered to balance structural integrity with comfort. Each chair is equipped with fitted beige canvas cushions that are padded and segmented for ergonomic support. The cushions are secured with canvas ties and have removable covers.
The chairs incorporate an adjustable reclining mechanism allowing the backrest to be positioned at multiple angles. The construction highlights visible brass hardware and traditional joinery, underscoring the honest materiality and robust craftsmanship that define Mogensen’s work. The accompanying side tables, also made from beech, feature slatted tops and folding bases. Their design visually echoes the chairs, creating a cohesive formal vocabulary throughout the set.
Børge Mogensen (1914–1972) was a leading figure in Danish functionalism and a key contributor to post-war Scandinavian modernism. His designs prioritize utility, durability, and democratic accessibility, often drawing inspiration from vernacular traditions and translating them into modern forms. Produced by Søborg Møbelfabrik, a company notable for its mid-century furniture, this set reflects Mogensen’s exploration of outdoor and leisure furniture adaptable to both interior and exterior settings.
The set is in vintage condition, showing signs of wear consistent with age. The beech frames have developed an even patina with some surface marks, while the canvas cushions maintain their functionality and uniform tone but display fading, occasional staining, and light structural wear to the padding.
Each chair measures 60.5 centimeters in width, 95 centimeters in depth, and 87 centimeters in height, with a seat height of 36 centimeters (approximately 23.8 x 37.4 x 34.3 inches, seat height 14.2 inches). Each side table measures 58 centimeters in width, 44.5 centimeters in depth, and 38 centimeters in height (approximately 22.8 x 17.5 x 15 inches).
