Information

This pair of easy chairs and matching stool, model EJ-100, was designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1960 and produced by Erik Jørgensen in Denmark. Known as the “Ox Chair” for its distinctive horn-like headrest, the set exemplifies Wegner’s sculptural modernism, where ergonomic comfort, material honesty, and formal innovation converge.

The chairs feature a dynamic, organic form built around a steel frame and upholstered in original black leather. The seat, backrest, and arm sections flow into a continuous shape with sweeping curves. The boldly projecting headrest rolls outward horizontally, balancing the curved armrests that mirror the cylindrical profile of the headrest. The chair’s body is slightly reclined and wide, designed to encourage a relaxed posture. The ottoman complements the chairs with matching leather upholstery and tubular steel legs, creating a cohesive visual rhythm.

The base of each piece is made from chromed tubular steel, with subtly angled legs ending in flared disk feet. This provides a visual lightness and a contrast to the substantial upholstered upper sections. The black leather retains a smooth semi-matte finish with natural patina and minor creasing consistent with age, remaining in very good vintage condition with intact stitching and taut upholstery.

Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) is celebrated as a master of Danish modern design, especially for his wooden seating. The EJ-100 marked his exploration into more expressive, sculptural seating forms. Originally introduced in 1960, it gained renewed attention in the 1980s following a reissue by Erik Jørgensen. This model remains a signature piece within Wegner’s oeuvre, reflecting the mid-century fascination with combining organic shapes and industrial materials.

Each chair measures 100 cm wide, 95 cm deep, and 90 cm high, with a seat height of 35 cm (approximately 39.4 inches wide, 37.4 inches deep, 35.4 inches high, and 13.8 inches seat height). The ottoman measures 75 cm wide, 48 cm deep, and 33 cm high (approximately 29.5 inches wide, 18.9 inches deep, and 13 inches high).
