Information

This is a rare set of eight dining chairs, model 78, designed by Niels Otto Møller and produced by J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1960s. The design exemplifies Danish mid-century modernism, with its emphasis on organic forms, handcrafted detailing, and material expressiveness.

Each chair is constructed from solid rosewood, characterized by deep reddish-brown hues and intricate grain patterning. The chair frame is elegantly sculpted, with tapering legs and gently curving back posts that transition seamlessly into a three-slat horizontal backrest. The back slats are slightly bowed for ergonomic support, demonstrating Møller’s focus on both aesthetics and comfort.

The seat retains its original black leather upholstery, which shows a soft, natural patina with visible creasing and light wear from age. The leather is fitted taut over a subtly dished seat structure, designed to cradle the sitter. The refined joinery and lack of visible fasteners further enhance the purity of form, a hallmark of Møller’s craftsmanship philosophy.

Niels O. Møller (1920–1982) was a Danish designer known for his dedication to traditional woodworking and his preference for solid wood furniture assembled entirely by hand. He founded J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik in 1944, and his designs—particularly dining chairs—have become iconic within the Scandinavian design canon. Model 78, designed in the late 1950s and produced into the 1960s, is considered one of his finest expressions of the Danish modern idiom.

J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik was a highly respected Danish workshop that specialized in hand-assembled furniture. Their output reflects a deep commitment to material integrity and a continuity of Danish cabinetmaking traditions adapted for the modern home.

The set is in very good vintage condition, structurally sound with minor surface wear and light patina on the leather, appropriate to its age. The rosewood frames retain a uniform finish and display beautifully preserved grain and coloration.

Each chair measures 49 cm in width, 48 cm in depth, and 80 cm in height, with a seat height of 44 cm. These dimensions correspond approximately to 19.3 inches wide, 18.9 inches deep, 31.5 inches high, and a seat height of 17.3 inches.
