Hans Wegner lounge chair
The Flag Halyard Chair, designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by Getama in Denmark, stands as one of the most distinctive and avant-garde creations in the canon of Scandinavian modern design. Introduced in 1950, this chair represents a departure from Wegner’s more familiar wood-based designs, showcasing his experimental spirit and command of a broad material vocabulary.
Constructed from polished stainless steel, the chair’s frame has a clean, industrial precision that contrasts sharply with the organic tactility of its seat. The seating surface is composed of tightly woven flagline—natural cord typically used in maritime applications—wrapped in a continuous, sinuous loop that forms a hammock-like cradle. This flagline construction gives the chair its name and contributes both structural resilience and visual lightness, while embracing the user in a suspended, reclined posture.
The chair’s striking silhouette is accentuated by its bold angles and sweeping lines. The rear legs are angled backward in a poised stance, while the front legs support the dramatic arc of the frame. This geometry, combined with the fluidity of the woven seat, evokes both strength and suppleness, embodying Wegner’s signature ability to combine sculptural form with ergonomic sensitivity.
A muted green head cushion, secured with leather straps, offers targeted neck support and adds a subtle color contrast to the natural flagline. The inclusion of a soft sheepskin throw not only enhances comfort but introduces a warm, textural counterpoint to the steel and rope—further reinforcing the chair’s balance between industrial and organic elements.
Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) is widely recognized as one of the greatest designers of the 20th century, known for his mastery of woodworking and his deep understanding of human-centered design. With the Flag Halyard Chair, he explored a radically different aesthetic while maintaining his dedication to comfort, quality, and proportion. Though visually distinct from his wooden lounge chairs, this design remains fully aligned with his ethos of purposeful, honest construction.
Produced by Getama, one of Wegner’s long-time collaborators, the Flag Halyard Chair is built to the highest standards of Danish craftsmanship. Getama’s meticulous attention to material and finish ensures the longevity and precision of each piece.
This example is in excellent vintage condition. The flagline is evenly patinated and structurally sound, exhibiting the subtle aging that enhances its visual richness. The stainless steel frame is polished and free from corrosion or damage. The original green cushion remains in very good shape, with only minor wear, while the sheepskin retains its softness and warmth.
