Information

This pair of mid-century side tables was produced by Hugo Troeds in Sweden during the 1950s. Each table features two stacked surfaces supported by slender, black-lacquered steel legs. The tabletops are crafted from teak veneer with solid teak edges, displaying a warm reddish-brown tone and clear linear grain. The lower surface is elongated with gently curved sides, while the smaller upper platform is slightly offset and supported on one side by a delicate steel extension, resulting in a light, asymmetrical profile.

The tapered legs end in rounded ball feet, enhancing the tables’ visual lightness and sculptural presence. The tiered construction offers practical functionality alongside a refined formal balance, allowing the upper level to serve as additional display or storage space without encroaching on the lower surface. The combination of natural wood and industrial materials reflects Scandinavian modernist ideals of restrained, functional design.

Hugo Troeds, based in Bjärnum, Sweden, was active during the mid-20th century and collaborated with various Swedish designers to produce accessible modern furniture characterized by careful proportion, joinery, and quality materials. Although these tables are unsigned, their design closely aligns with Troeds’ aesthetic and the broader Scandinavian design language of the 1950s.

Both tables are in very good vintage condition with minor surface wear typical of age. The teak surfaces maintain a clear, even finish, and the black-lacquered metal shows a light, consistent patina.

Each table measures 70.5 centimeters wide by 33 centimeters deep. The lower surface height is 47 centimeters, and the upper shelf height is 65 centimeters (approximately 27.8 by 13 inches, lower height 18.5 inches, upper height 25.6 inches).
