Information

This pair of Spanish Chairs, model 2226, embodies Børge Mogensen’s pursuit of structural clarity and functional comfort. Crafted in Denmark during the late 1950s by Fredericia Stolefabrik, each chair presents a broad, low-slung silhouette defined by solid oak members and generous leather surfaces. The oak frame, finished to reveal its natural grain, carries a warm honey tone that harmonizes with the rich cognac of the saddle leather.

The form is anchored by thick, flat oak planks that serve both as armrests and as primary structural elements. These wide supports extend beyond the seat plane, offering ample resting surface and accentuating the chair’s horizontal emphasis. The leather seat and back panels are heavy, vegetable-tanned hides, tensioned across the frame and secured with solid brass buckles and leather straps. This system not only reinforces the connection between upholstery and structure but also nods to the Spanish and saddlery traditions that inspired Mogensen’s design.

Ergonomically, the chair invites a relaxed posture. The deep seat and gently reclined back encourage a comfort-oriented experience, while the exposed frame and uncluttered lines maintain a crisp, modernist vocabulary. The leather yields slightly under weight, creating a bespoke fit over time, and its surface develops a pronounced patina, with subtle creasing and variation in tone that testify to both use and age.

Børge Mogensen (1914–1972) was a cornerstone of Danish functionalism, known for marrying vernacular craftsmanship with modernist restraint. His Spanish Chair, introduced in 1958, quickly became an icon of post-war design, celebrated for its honest expression of materials and straightforward construction. Fredericia Stolefabrik’s collaboration ensured that Mogensen’s exacting standards were met through precise joinery and meticulous leatherwork, solidifying the piece’s reputation for enduring quality.

These particular examples are in good vintage condition. The leather exhibits natural surface markings, light scuffs, and a deepening of color in high-contact areas, all consistent with decades of use. The oak frames remain sound, with minor patina and only faint signs of wear to edges and legs. Each chair measures 82 cm in width, 60 cm in depth, and 67 cm in height, with a seat height of 33 cm—approximately 32.3 by 23.6 by 26.4 inches overall, and a 13-inch seat height—offering both timeless appeal and lasting comfort.
