Hans Wegner easy chair

This rare and early folding chair, model JH-512, was designed by Hans Wegner and produced by Danish cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen in 1950. It is a notable example of Danish modernism, combining the strength and natural beauty of oak with the lightness and texture of handwoven cane. The chair’s frame is constructed from solid oak, selected for its durability and distinctive grain patterns, while the seat and backrest are made from handwoven cane, which contributes to both the chair’s structural integrity and its lightweight quality.

The design of the JH-512 is elegant and sculptural, with gently curved legs and a slightly reclined seat that offers ergonomic support. The chair’s foldable design allows for easy compact storage, while its original oak wall hook is included for vertical storage when not in use, adding a functional detail to the piece. The integrated handle cutouts in the armrests are both a practical and aesthetically pleasing feature, enhancing the chair’s refined design.

Hans Wegner, a key figure in Danish modernism, was renowned for his mastery of wood and his ability to elevate traditional craftsmanship into innovative and timeless furniture designs. His collaboration with Johannes Hansen helped establish Denmark’s international reputation for high-quality, handcrafted furniture. The JH-512 was first presented at The Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition at Designmuseum Danmark in 1949, an event that showcased the best contemporary Danish furniture of the time.

This chair remains in good original condition, with a rich patina on the oak frame that enhances its visual appeal, while the cane shows minor wear consistent with its age. The dimensions of the chair are 61 cm in width (approximately 24 inches), 74 cm in depth (approximately 29.1 inches), and 76.5 cm in height (approximately 30.1 inches), with a seat height of 39 cm (approximately 15.4 inches).
