Arne Hovmand-Olsen armchair
The very rare armchair, model 308, designed by Arne Hovmand-Olsen and produced by Mogens Kold in Denmark in 1956, is a notable example of Danish modern furniture design. It exemplifies Hovmand-Olsen’s signature style, characterized by fluid lines, natural materials, and a sculptural approach to functional objects.
Crafted in warm, richly toned teak, the chair features a continuous, flowing form where the backrest and armrests merge seamlessly into a unified, curvilinear structure. This organic shape not only contributes to the chair’s aesthetic elegance but also enhances ergonomic comfort. The teak wood is finely finished, with the natural grain left visible and pronounced, adding visual depth and tactile richness to the overall composition.
The seat is upholstered in the original black leather, offering a contrasting texture and tone against the warm wooden frame. The leather exhibits a gentle patina and minor creasing—both indicative of age and use, and consistent with well-preserved vintage upholstery. This contrast between materials reinforces the design’s mid-century character, balancing softness with structural clarity.
Structurally, the chair is supported by three slightly splayed legs—a rare and distinctive design feature that enhances both stability and visual lightness. The rear leg, in particular, showcases precise craftsmanship through visible circular wooden plugs that mark the joinery. These subtle details underscore the artisanal quality of the piece, typical of the furniture produced by Mogens Kold during the 1950s and 60s.
Arne Hovmand-Olsen (1919–1989) was a Danish designer known for his refined, often experimental approach to form, and his ability to integrate sculptural aesthetics with practical design. His collaborations with manufacturers like Mogens Kold yielded some of the most innovative Danish furniture of the postwar period. Model 308, with its elegant profile and inventive structural arrangement, stands out as one of his most compelling creations.
The chair remains in good vintage condition. The teak frame shows minor surface wear and light marks appropriate to its age, but it retains its structural integrity and visual clarity. The leather seat is original and well-preserved, with expected signs of use.
