Information

This rare set of eight dining chairs, model ‘Knockdown’, was designed by Yngve Ekström and produced in Sweden during the 1950s. The design reflects Ekström’s focus on modern production techniques and architectural clarity, merging industrial logic with Scandinavian material warmth.

The chairs are constructed from a combination of black lacquered wood, mahogany veneer, and brass fittings. Each chair features a sculptural seat and backrest formed from a single sheet of molded mahogany plywood with a pronounced vertical grain. The back has a rounded, elongated oval shape with a soft taper, while the seat curves ergonomically for comfort. The shell is supported by a structural frame of black lacquered solid wood legs arranged in an A-frame configuration, fixed with exposed brass fasteners that emphasize the constructional approach and allow for knockdown (disassemblable) functionality. The contrast between the dark lacquered base and the warm reddish-brown tone of the mahogany highlights the interplay of material and form. The brass hardware introduces a subtle decorative element and speaks to Ekström’s interest in visible joint detailing. The overall silhouette is lightweight, with a strong sense of rhythm and repetition when grouped in a set.

Condition is very good, with light patina and wear consistent with age and use. The lacquered frames show minor edge wear and small surface marks, while the mahogany seats have a well-maintained finish with some light scratches and age-related color variation. All structural elements remain stable.

Yngve Ekström was a key figure in the evolution of Swedish modernism, known for both his furniture design and his role in co-founding the manufacturer Swedese.

Dimensions are 49.5 cm wide, 50 cm deep, and 87.5 cm high, with a seat height of 45 cm (19.5 × 19.7 × 34.4 in, SH 17.7 in).
