Hans Bergström table lamp
This rare table lamp was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by ASEA in Sweden during the 1950s. The lamp exemplifies the restrained elegance and functional beauty of Scandinavian mid-century lighting design. It combines a flared brass shade and a fluted teak stem, reflecting the Nordic appreciation for high-quality natural materials and simple geometric forms.
The lamp features a spun brass dome-shaped shade with a gently raised top section and precise rectangular perforations circling the lower edge. These perforations create a decorative element while also allowing diffused light to escape when the lamp is illuminated. The interior of the shade is finished in a light tone to enhance light reflection. Supporting the shade is a trio of slender brass arms that connect to a central socket. The stem is crafted from solid teak with vertical fluting, adding texture and emphasizing the lamp’s verticality. The design is completed with a circular brass base that provides visual balance and stability.
The lamp remains in good vintage condition with signs of use consistent with its age. The brass surfaces display a warm patina along with some minor scratches and oxidation, particularly on the shade and base. The teak stem retains its rich color and pronounced grain, showing only minimal surface wear. The original ASEA Belysning manufacturer’s stamp and model number (E1149) are clearly visible on the underside, along with the Swedish electrical safety mark.
Hans Bergström, founder of the Ateljé Lyktan lighting company, was one of Sweden’s leading lighting designers in the 20th century. His collaborations with ASEA during the 1940s and 1950s produced some of his most iconic works. This table lamp reflects Bergström’s approach to combining modernist form with artisanal detailing and practical lighting functionality.
The lamp measures 31 cm in diameter (12.2 inches) and 45 cm in height (17.7 inches). It is a fine example of mid-century Scandinavian design, where honest materials and carefully considered details create both aesthetic and functional value.
