Information

This rare matching pair of floor lamps, model S-1871, was designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by his company, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd, Sweden, during the 1950s. The design reflects Jakobsson’s signature approach, blending simplicity with refined materials and functional elegance, which were key elements of Scandinavian lighting aesthetics in the mid-20th century.

Each lamp features a slender cylindrical shaft composed of two contrasting segments: the lower portion is finished in black lacquered metal, while the upper portion is crafted from polished brass. The materials are joined at a clean junction with a small collar, offering a precise and minimal transition between the two surfaces. The shaft rises from a circular, weight-stabilized black lacquered metal base, ensuring stability despite the lamps’ tall proportions.

The brass upper section supports a standard socket mount and bears an original manufacturer label reading “S 1871 HANS-AGNE MARKARYD”. While the lamps are pictured with shades for illustrative purposes, they are sold without lampshades. The original design allows for compatibility with a range of traditional or contemporary shades, depending on the desired interior context.

Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) was a prominent Swedish lighting designer known for his atmospheric lighting fixtures that emphasized softness and sculptural form. His workshop in Markaryd produced a wide range of fixtures, often utilizing brass, glass, and lacquered metals in minimalist yet distinctive arrangements. Model S-1871 represents the quieter side of his work, prioritizing clarity of form and the quality of light over decorative ornamentation.

The lamps are in very good vintage condition. The lacquered surfaces show minor signs of use, including small scuffs along the base edges, while the brass components have developed a natural, warm patina.

Each lamp measures 12 cm in diameter and 154 cm in height (approximately 4.72 inches in diameter and 60.63 inches in height).
