Hans Bergström table lamp
This rare table lamp was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by ASEA in Sweden during the 1950s. It represents an early example of Scandinavian modern lighting, blending traditional materials with a modernist aesthetic. Bergström, a key figure in mid-century Swedish lighting, was celebrated for his refined, balanced compositions, and this lamp exemplifies his attention to proportion, detail, and craftsmanship.
The lamp is constructed from brass and teakwood. Its conical shade is made of patinated brass, featuring a flared profile and a pierced decorative edge with a repeated X-pattern that allows subtle light diffusion when illuminated. The wide brass shade is mounted on a tapering beechwood stem, which includes vertical fluting at its lower section, providing visual texture and an ergonomic grip. The stem is turned from solid teak and finished in a warm natural tone that contrasts gently with the brass elements.
A circular brass base supports the lamp and houses the original push-button switch. Designed for a single bulb, the lamp casts downward and diffused lateral light, making it suitable for desk or ambient lighting. The overall form is both architectural and sculptural, reflecting Bergström’s post-war design language.
The lamp is in very good condition, with a warm patina on the brass surfaces and minor age-related oxidation and wear. The beechwood stem is clean, structurally sound, and free from cracks or discoloration. All components appear original and fully functional.
Hans Bergström (1910–1996) founded Ateljé Lyktan and played a central role in defining Swedish lighting aesthetics in the mid-20th century. While this lamp was produced by ASEA (Allmänna Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget), a major Swedish electrical and lighting manufacturer, it bears Bergström’s signature blend of functional simplicity and refined decorative detail. ASEA collaborated with prominent designers throughout the 1940s to 1960s and was known for its quality production in lighting and electrical goods.
The lamp measures 40 centimeters in diameter and 53 centimeters in height (approximately 15.7 by 20.9 inches).
