Information

This rare pair of wall lamps, model 7313, was designed by the esteemed Finnish lighting designer Paavo Tynell and produced in the 1940s by Idman in Finland. Exemplifying Tynell’s distinctive approach to lighting, these lamps integrate refined materials, intricate detailing, and a poetic sense of atmosphere, characteristic of his work during the mid-20th century.

Each lamp is constructed primarily from copper, with a rich surface patina that has developed over time, giving the pieces a distinctive greenish hue. This natural oxidation not only speaks to the age and authenticity of the lamps but also adds depth and historical character to their surfaces. The form of the shade is hemispherical, elegantly proportioned and perforated with a regular pattern of small holes. These perforations allow light to filter through the copper shell in a subtle and decorative manner, casting dappled shadows that enrich the visual environment.

Housed within each shade is an opaline glass diffuser, which softens the light and ensures a warm, ambient glow. This inner layer of glass tempers the output of the bulb, eliminating harsh glare while maintaining sufficient illumination for practical use. The result is a layered lighting effect that contributes both functional and atmospheric qualities.

The lamps measure 28 cm in height, 30 cm in width, and 23 cm in depth (approximately 11 inches high, 11.8 inches wide, and 9 inches deep). The proportions are well balanced, allowing the lamps to project gracefully from the wall without dominating the space. They are in good vintage condition, with wear and patina consistent with age. The aging of the copper and slight surface irregularities are not flaws but integral aspects of their material identity.

Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of modern lighting design in Finland. Known for his work with Taito Oy and later with Idman, Tynell brought a sculptural sensitivity to functional lighting, often combining perforated metals, glass, and brass to create objects that were both utilitarian and poetic. His work has received renewed international attention for its blend of craftsmanship, innovation, and elegance.

Idman, one of Finland’s most prominent lighting manufacturers during the mid-20th century, was responsible for producing many of Tynell’s most iconic designs. Their collaboration in the 1940s and 50s marked a high point in Finnish lighting design, both domestically and internationally.

This model 7313 pair represents a refined and rare example of Tynell’s early postwar production, combining functional design with material richness and ambient sophistication.
