Paavo Tynell attrib. wall lamp
Rare wall lamp attributed to Paavo Tynell and produced by Idman, Finland, during the 1950s. The lamp represents Tynell’s distinctive approach to lighting design, where functional engineering is combined with refined craftsmanship and an organic visual language. Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Nordic lighting design, Tynell became known for introducing a softer and more decorative expression to Scandinavian modernism through the use of brass, perforated surfaces, and carefully considered light diffusion.
The lamp is constructed with a slender brass wall mount and a long, elegantly curved cantilever arm that extends outward from the wall. The arm is adjustable, allowing the overall depth to be altered according to placement requirements. Its lightweight appearance is balanced by a substantial conical shade composed of thin wooden slats connected by a delicate framework. The natural wood displays a warm honey-brown tone that complements the golden brass structure and reinforces the lamp’s organic character. The combination of brass and wood reflects the growing interest in natural materials and handcrafted details that emerged within Finnish design during the post-war period.
The large conical shade measures 47.5 cm (18.7 in.) in diameter and creates a broad, downward-directed light distribution. The open lattice construction allows portions of the light to filter through the shade, producing a subtle interplay of light and shadow while maintaining a warm ambient glow. The geometric arrangement of the wooden slats gives the shade an architectural quality while simultaneously referencing traditional craft techniques and natural forms, characteristics frequently associated with Tynell’s most sought-after lighting designs.
Idman, one of Finland’s leading lighting manufacturers throughout the twentieth century, collaborated with several important Finnish designers and played a significant role in bringing high-quality modern lighting to both domestic and public interiors. The partnership between Paavo Tynell and Finnish manufacturers such as Idman contributed significantly to the international recognition of Finnish lighting design during the mid-century era.
The lamp remains in good vintage condition with visible signs of age and use consistent with its period. The brass surfaces have developed a natural patina with areas of wear, scratches, oxidation, and darkening that testify to decades of use and contribute to its historical authenticity. The wooden shade presents well with minor age-related wear and retains its original visual character. The lamp is fitted with a cord-mounted switch and remains fully functional.
