Hans-Agne Jakobsson floor lamp
This is a very rare floor lamp, model G-110, designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by his own company, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd, Sweden during the 1950s. The lamp is composed of a vertically oriented brass structure and a silk fringe shade, characteristic of Jakobsson’s distinctive approach to lighting design, where material delicacy meets architectural form.
The lamp’s base is formed from a weighted brass disc, supporting a slender, polished brass rod that rises to meet the central body of the shade. The light source is shielded by cascading layers of cream-colored silk fringes arranged in concentric tiers. These fringes are mounted to a circular brass frame, diffusing the light evenly and softly while creating a warm, ambient glow. When illuminated, the shade casts intricate shadows on its surroundings, emphasizing texture and softness in contrast to the clean, metallic vertical support. The combination of golden brass and the ivory-toned silk creates a visual warmth that enhances the tactile, decorative presence of the piece.
Condition is good vintage with evident patina on the brass surfaces, particularly the base and vertical stem, consistent with age and use. The silk fringe is intact and retains its structure, though it shows slight tonal variation from age, adding to its authenticity and atmospheric quality. The lamp remains structurally sound and fully operational.
Hans-Agne Jakobsson was a prominent Swedish lighting designer whose career flourished from the 1950s through the 1970s. Known for his experimental yet soft visual language, Jakobsson frequently used unconventional materials such as fringes, thin veneers, and perforated metals to produce gentle, ambient lighting effects. His designs often challenged traditional lamp forms and emphasized the emotive potential of light, shadow, and surface.
Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd became a key producer of Scandinavian lighting under Jakobsson’s leadership, with a body of work that continues to influence contemporary lighting design. This particular model, G-110, represents one of Jakobsson’s more decorative and theatrical concepts, balancing vertical elegance with a tactile, textile presence.
The lamp fits within the Scandinavian mid-century modern tradition, yet its fringe-based diffusion gives it a unique expression that softens the typically austere geometry associated with the period.
The dimensions are 140 cm in height and 39 cm in diameter. In imperial units, that is approximately 55.1 inches high and 15.4 inches in diameter.
