Table lamp
This rare and large table lamp, produced in Sweden during the 1940s, is an elegant example of transitional design, bridging pre-war classical influences with emerging modernist tendencies. Though the designer remains unidentified, the lamp exhibits a sophisticated material palette and balanced proportions that align with Scandinavian decorative arts of the period.
The structure is anchored by a round base and stem in nickel-plated metal, offering a cool, understated luster with a soft patina acquired over time. The nickel finish is smooth and subtly reflective, providing a clean contrast to the matte surfaces of the other materials. Signs of age-related wear on the plating are visible but evenly distributed, enhancing the lamp’s vintage authenticity without detracting from its refined appearance.
Positioned at the upper portion of the stem is a frosted opaline glass diffuser. This component is cylindrical in form and lightly domed, designed to modulate the light before it reaches the shade. The opaline glass emits a gentle, even glow when lit, contributing to a warm and ambient lighting effect. The glass remains intact and free from damage, retaining its soft translucency and functional clarity.
The lamp is topped with a large, pleated fabric shade in a neutral tone—beige or light cream—that complements the silvery nickel and white glass. The pleating introduces a visual rhythm and textural contrast, softening the strict geometry of the base and giving the lamp a classical, yet timeless profile. The wide diameter of the shade provides a strong visual anchor, and when illuminated, it radiates a diffuse, inviting warmth.
The overall silhouette is vertically oriented and cylindrically defined, with smooth transitions between the metal, glass, and textile components. The scale of the lamp makes it suitable for larger surfaces such as sideboards, writing desks, or console tables, where both its functional and sculptural presence can be appreciated.
The condition of the lamp is good, with wear consistent with age. The nickel-plated surfaces show patina and light marks, the opaline glass is well preserved, and the fabric shade is clean and structurally intact.
The lamp measures 46 cm in diameter and 72 cm in height. In inches, this corresponds approximately to 18.1 inches in diameter and 28.3 inches in height.
