Hans-Agne Jakobsson ceiling lamp
This rare and early ceiling lamp, model T-434/24, was designed by Swedish lighting master Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd, Sweden, during the 1960s. The chandelier exemplifies Jakobsson’s distinctive approach, combining technical precision with a striking visual and material presence.
The fixture is crafted from brass that has developed a matte patina over time, lending it a subtle aged character. It features a structural configuration of twenty-four light points distributed evenly across two circular tiers of arms. Each light is enclosed within a cylindrical blue glass shade, which softens and diffuses the illumination while adding a vivid splash of color. The cool blue tones of the glass contrast dynamically with the warm brass framework, creating a visually engaging interplay between materials.
The overall design is geometrically balanced with radial symmetry and carefully considered proportions. The clean, linear brass arms and central column reflect Jakobsson’s modernist influences, while the bold blue glass elements introduce a decorative and sculptural quality. The arrangement of the glass shades in two tiers—an outer ring of lower lights and a raised inner circle—adds depth and vertical layering to the piece. This composition gives the chandelier a monumental presence, making it well suited for spaces with generous ceiling height.
Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) was a pioneering Swedish lighting designer celebrated for his integration of organic forms and modernist principles. After early experience with Carl Malmsten and General Motors, Jakobsson founded his own company in Markaryd in the 1950s. His explorations of light diffusion and materiality established him as a central figure in Scandinavian lighting design. Large-scale chandeliers from his early production, such as this model, are now considered rare and highly sought after.
The lamp is in very good condition, with an original brass surface exhibiting natural aging and all original blue glass shades intact. There are no notable structural modifications or replacements, preserving the design’s authenticity.
The chandelier measures 75 cm in diameter and 250 cm in total height (approximately 29.5 x 98.4 inches).
